Timeline of Mathilda's Life

  • 7 February 1102 - Likely birthdate of Mathilda
  • August 1103 - Mathilda's brother, William, is born
  • Autumn 1108 - Mathilda's father, King Henry I, places her and her brother in the care of Archbishop Anselm of Canterbury
  • 13 June 1109 - King Henry I reaches an agreement with imperial envoys that Mathilda will marry Henry V of Germany, who is soon to be Holy Roman Emperor
  • February 1110 - Mathilda leaves England and travels to the empire to meet her future husband
  • 25 July 1110 - Mathilda is crowned as aueen of the Romans in the cathedral of Mainz
  • 13 April 1111 - Henry V pressures the pope into crowning him as emperor
  • January 1114 - Mathilda is married to Henry V in Worms
  • 11 February 1115 - The imperial army is defeated by Henry V's opponents at the Battle of Welfesholz
  • 24 July 1115 - Countess Mathilda of Tuscany dies, and both the emperor and the Church claim her lands
  • January 1116 - Mathilda and her husband travel to Italy
  • 13 May 1117 - Both emperor and empress are ceremonially crowned in Rome by Maurice Bourdin, the archbishop of Braga
  • 1 May 1118 - Mathilda's mother, the queen of England, dies
  • 25 November 1120 - Prince William of England and others perish in the White Ship disaster, leaving Mathilda as Henry I's only legitimate child

​These are the events covered in the first book of the series, The Girl Empress. The rest of her life events will be described in the forthcoming books, The Forgotten Monarch and The Eternal Queen.
